DIY Chocolate Decorating Cookies for Kids
A Fun Indoor Activity for Preschoolers

A Perfect Indoor Activity for Dusty or Rainy Days
On weekends when the weather isn’t great, it can be difficult to plan outdoor activities for kids. Recently, we had one of those days in Korea when the air was filled with yellow dust and fine dust, making it impossible to spend time outside.
Thankfully, I had prepared something in advance — a DIY chocolate cookie decorating kit for kids. The kit included cookies, chocolate pens for drawing, and colorful sprinkles. Just looking at the box was enough to make my child excited. Sometimes the anticipation alone already feels like part of the fun.

What Is a Chocolate Decorating Cookie Activity?
This activity is very simple. Kids decorate cookies by drawing on them with chocolate pens. It’s basically edible doodling.
You can simply hand the kit to your child and let them decorate on their own, but I’ve noticed that kids focus much better when a parent sits next to them and joins the activity, even for a short time.
At first, I helped my child decorate a little and showed how to use the chocolate pen. After a few minutes, I stepped away and let my child continue alone. My child happily decorated cookies for about 30 minutes.
When I later said, “I’ll finish the remaining cookies,” my child immediately came back and sat down again to continue decorating together. Moments like this remind me how much kids enjoy doing activities side by side with someone they love.

Why Kids Love This Activity
Chocolate cookie decorating is simple, but kids absolutely love it. There are a few reasons why this activity works so well.
- Creative expression – Kids can draw anything they want on the cookies.
- Focus and concentration – Surprisingly, children can sit and concentrate for quite a long time.
- Sensory fun – Drawing, decorating, and even tasting the chocolate makes the activity more exciting.
- A little break for parents – Once kids get into it, they often stay focused for quite a while.
Having multiple chocolate pen colors makes the activity even more fun and encourages kids to be more creative.
And of course, kids sometimes draw and eat at the same time. If the cookies are meant as a gift that might not be ideal, but for a home activity it actually makes the experience more enjoyable for them.

How We Did It at Home
The preparation for this activity is very easy.
All I needed to do was prepare the cookies and chocolate pens. To make the chocolate easier to draw with, I placed the chocolate pens in warm water for a few minutes. This softens the chocolate so it flows smoothly when kids squeeze the pen.
After that, I simply showed a quick example of how to decorate a cookie.
And that’s it — the activity is ready to begin.
Once kids understand what to do, they usually start experimenting with their own designs right away.

Why Doing It Together Makes It Even Better
While kids can definitely enjoy this activity alone, doing it together can make the experience even more meaningful.
Children naturally enjoy activities more when someone joins them. They observe, learn, and feel encouraged. Sitting next to your child while decorating cookies is also a great opportunity to chat, laugh, and spend time together.
Another practical reason is that chocolate pens tend to harden quickly, so it’s helpful for a parent to be nearby to warm them again if needed.
And of course, one of the best parts comes after decorating — sharing and eating the cookies together.

Final Thoughts
DIY chocolate drawing cookies are a simple but surprisingly engaging indoor activity for kids. The materials are easy to prepare, the activity encourages creativity, and children can stay focused longer than you might expect.
It’s also one of those activities that naturally creates small moments of connection between parents and kids. Decorating cookies together, talking while drawing, and finally enjoying the finished treats makes the whole experience feel special.
If you’re looking for a fun indoor activity for kids on dusty days, rainy weekends, or quiet afternoons at home, chocolate cookie decorating is definitely worth trying.
